  • If you buy directly from us and receive it via the post , then you can ONLY pay by EFT ( So scammers don’t bother OK? ). The bank ( Standard Bank in this case ) keep tabs on us , know everything about us , and provide you with protection and dispute resolution avenues if you are not satisfied.
  • The modems are provided through RetroMod CC , a close corporation in SA which has assets and can be sued.

Some FAQ :

  • What kind of warranty do I get with these modems?  :  These modems have been unlocked so you can use them with any 3G network worldwide. This is great for those who travel , or who want to change networks ( such as from MTN to Vodacom ) on a whim , but the modification voids the warranty. However , We give you a 100% refund Guarantee that the modem will work on arrival. The modem is pretty indestructible unless you wet it or burn it. I have stood on them , sat on them , dropped them and they still work ;-).
  • Why are these modems cheaper than in a typical Vodacom shop? – What’s the catch?   : The  modems are about 30-40% cheaper than in the shops. Our price is reasonable , but not cheap.  We’re offering them to you at the price they should be sold at. Vodacom is way overcharging for them – and we take advantage of this by undercutting them – resulting in a win – win situation for us and for you.
  • Can I Pickup the modem from you? I’m also in Durban!  : Sure – just arrange a pickup time with us ( 0848517229 ) and we’ll send someone round. No direct pickups are allowed. You are welcome to pay COD

Hi

I use speed services usually , but don’t mind doing postnet - it costs R10 extra on the overnight shipping though.
I don’t have anyone in JHB , but if you have a mate in Durban I can meet up with that person and they can inspect it and pay for it.

very2 sad….the main problem is this modem cant work with my win xp 64bit….

I have sold to 3 customers so far who have xp 64 bit (and 1 Vista 61 bit) , and the modem worked right out of the box. This is because I load my modems with generic Huawei software and NOT the Vodafone software it comes with.

Hope that helps

Hi - Thabani

Our office is a home office and we do not allow direct collection - although we will be happy to deliver to your office in Durban or meet up for delivery at a public place.

If you email me your telephone number I can reserve a modem for you and we can arrange collection.

The short answer is yes. I got it to work on Ubuntu. However , you will have to do some configuration to get it to work , and I cannot help you with the configuration. Is this Asus an eePC?

Have you tried this one on Win7 RC1?

Hi,

I cant seem to get this to work with Windows 7 x64, the off the stick drivers tend to recognise one of the devices incorrectly as a tv card.

Off the stick drivers fail, and using VMC LATEST the modem ports hang with 633 which is the good ol port in use error.

Any ideas?

Regards Craig

I have bought In january 2009 in sommerset west in a Vodacom shop the hsdpa usb stick. It worked on and off. Since End of July I can’t get connected to it again. I have been back and forth with this USB stick and notebook to the same shop I bought it from. No help could be given. I called 082155, even there they could not inform me what the problem is. The sim card is fine so they say. My daughter is a student in stellenbosch and you dont have a Vodacom key office there to seek help. She needs this USB 3g everyday for her research. please advise what to do? We are stuck without it. I’m in Namibia so not much of a help. Please contact her at 0738204349. This matter is very urgent.
Thanks Anja

Drat….Craig - I had one client who used VMC on Windows 7 64 - and it worked OK. But the on stick drivers were a no go - and after Windows did some updates the modem stopped working and he reverted to XP.

This could be a lot of different issues… I would hate to start hacking up your config and settings just to have the problem fixed up in a new release. Do you need 7 64 as a working machine or are you just playing with it?… If its the former we can try and work something out.

If its the latter….well…can you wait it out? It will be a month or so and people will start screaming for a 7 update for this thing…

@Anja

I am not a Vodacom employee and cant really provide support for their network issues - which is what this sounds like.

If the modem worked once or ever at all , then the modem and SIM is fine.

However - when I read something like this , these problems come to mind :

-Airtime or data bundle running out (An obvious one)

-Weak signal (Strongly suspected) - shes probably on a borderline of the coverage area , and when the signal fluctuates so does her ability to connect. This is not the modems fault - and the only thing you can do about it is to better leverage her signal in some way.

-Buy usb extension cables - put the computer next to a window and stick the modem out of the window with the extended cable.

-Buy something like this :

http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ADPT-024

And connect it to something like this :

http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=OMNI-A0039-02

and then stick the second part out of the window. It may improve things.

Hi cladius

Unfortunately it is a technical job - You can send it to me for unlocking - the cost is R160 including overnight to counter shipping back to you. Its not cheap - but its probably better than buying a new stick. Please email me from the link above or post a message if you’re interested.

Thanks

Hello Lloyd

I just wanted to know if you are still selling the 3g / HSDPA Vodafone 7.2MBPS K3520 USB Modem Stick Unlocked + 20MB Internet and is the price still R1199. If yes, can I layby the stick. Say pay R600 now and the next R600 at the end of the month. I would also like to know which service provider (MTN, Vodacom, Virgin or Cell C) offers the best deal in terms of price and connectivity.

Kind regards,

Sibusiso

Please reply to email

Hi - Unfortunately laybys are not accepted. At the moment , for prepaid bandwidth , Vodacom looks the best.
Hope that helps

@Craig

Hi, I haven’t bought a modem from this site, but have the K3520 direct from Vodafone UK. It won’t work with Win 7 64bit version. Just thought I would let you know, other forums are coming up with problems as well. My error message is “2738 - cannot access VBscript”, different from others. There are posts on the HUawei forum asking for updated drivers for K3520 win 7 64 bit, so these may be coming shortly, if you can wait.

Can anyone tell me why these wireless modems are so expensive? Sheesh. I was just looking into getting 3G because my work’s 512 kbps adsl line sucks. And I don’t want to go on contract to get 3G.

But sheeeeesshhhhhhhhhhhhh

I’ll tell you. It would initially appear as though Vodacom is out to make gigantic profits. I think there is a more sinister reason. Most of those Vodacoms HSPDA towers are hooked up to fibre backhaul. Some via microwave. Those backhauls are expensive , and take MONTHS to implement and upgrade. In order to ensure quality of service , Vodacom cannot saturate the towers with too many users. So it keeps the prices of dongles in line with the number of users it can service on the towers…

We now have a website which you can purchase it off - http://www.3gmodems.co.za - and it will be shipped overnight to you. Yes , you can use the modem in India with MTNL and BSNL (the two HSDPA enabled networks in that country).
